  1. Paul Cianciolo response to Blog 15:
Makeup A: The makeup put on the man in this picture obviously is associated with a great amount of ageing by the character the man plays. The detailed wrinkles and shadows of the wrinkles allow for audiences to actually see the character instead of the actual age of the man playing the character. The gray hair and eyebrows also emphasize the aging of the character. The pale lips really allow for a bigger interpretation though. While this old character can be used in many different situations, the main theme that we can see is how age literally sucks the life out of you. As we age we loose the moisture of firmness of our skin along with the define colors of skin and hair. Using aging characters in plays allows for deeper themes that allow us to have deep interpretations of life.
Makeup B: The makeup used in this example brings out a lot of mix feelings that are really hard to decipher. The most obvious aspect is the pale white base used as the color of the skin. The white can represent a deathly character and the black cracks add an evil aspect to the overall look. While we can look at the makeup with a deathly theme, we can also look at it as fantasy. The gold design around the right eye can throw you off of what the majority of the face displays. While this make may seem very weird, it could just represent a common identity of the character. The white base with the black cracks could be the dark side of the character that outweighs the good of the gold design and vice versa.
Makeup C: The pale white face, red lipstick, and white wig obviously represent a character of the wealthier class of England or some other part of Europe vaguely back in the 15th to 17th century. The main thing I see in the people of that time using this type of makeup is to separate themselves from the lower class. The white paint used on the face is the opposite of the dirt scene on many peasants’ faces of that day. The red lips represent a healthy body with good nutrition. The thick white beard is a special aspect that resembled wisdom, because we become wiser as we age with our white hair.
Makeup D: This makeup setup is definitely fantasy. The difference in makeup B is that this example has a smiling face of the character. This can allow us to possibly assume that the character is part of a society of people like itself, like the movie Avatar. The best part about using elaborate makeup devices is how audiences may have a hard time connecting to a creature of far different aspects, but can later have a deep connection with the character through experiences they both go through. This aspect has worked through the years through a number of movies and is still on the rise.

  2. Make up 1: The first thing that i notice withthis make up is how old it makes the actor look. I would think that the story for this is a veteran of world war 2 or someone who has suffered through the years from stress or other crosses that they bared in their life. The make up gives this feeling of depression to the look of the actor and judging by the wrinkles it shows that this man has either been stressed over things or has just had a tough life in general. I first thought of this idea mainly because of how old the actor looks and the amount of facial wrinkle details that are associated with the make up.

Make up 2: This make up seems like it would tell the story of a person who was a fool in the medival time period or someone who was in one of the olden day italian festivals in italy. The facce paint is rather interesting because it engulfs the actors entire face in the make up. The make up may tell the story of someone who is in a state of sadness or like i said before a jester or fool. I thought of this idea just because of the colors used in the makeup and because the main facial color is a deep white.

Make up 3: This make up looks like it would come from someone who was in a colonial time period. Maybe even an actor form the film The Patriot. The whig gives away what exactly the facial make up represents. It could even be from a time periond in london or france. Overall i thought of the idea mainly because of the whig.

Make up 4: This one being the toughest to guess. It uses many vibrant and differing colors. Not the easiest to try and create a story about but i think it may have something to do with magic or sorcery. It might even be something that comes out of a cartoon. Possibilites could be endless on account of how diffrent it is compared to the other make up photos. This one is deffinetly the most unique of the four.

  3. Response to Michael Guerrero: I agree with you on makeup four. The possibilities of the story line are truly endless and it is the most unique of the four other makeup examples.

  4. For makeup A, the predominant aging shows the theme of the play. Wrinkles are shows throughout the character's face and neck. This play would obviously add older character's to the play's repertoire. We can certainly see that the use of the makeup here would be a major component to the believability of the character to the audience. This kind of makeup is certainly needed for the play's plot and story line. We, as audience members, can relate and get closer to this particular character.
Makeup B is extremely bazaar to the average person who hasn't seen the play. The differentiating designs and colors allows the audience member to believe this particular character isn't human at all, creating a very important aspect for the play's outline. We see that the base color for the character is white, making a sort of back drop for the rest of the make up around the eyes and lips of the actress. It is simply not just the makeup, but also the hair that adds to the character's role in the play.
In makeup C, it is definitely more simple in design. This whig and lack of colors creates a feeling that the play this character is in is a colonial British themed play. Id personally believe that the purpose of this character isnt as important as the previous two, as defined by the lack of concept and design. This style of makeup really speaks the the importance of this character to the play.
Makeup D is very mystical in nature and design. This bazaar colors is very much complimented by the look and color of the costume. Like in makeup B, this play portrays to me a play that involves mysticism, elegance, and an entertaining aspect which would very much appeal to the audience. I love this style more than any other style previous because so much thought was needed to create it. The angle of light is taken into account as one sees the reflection of light from the light blue under the actress's eyes.

    My response to Michael Guerrero:
I agree with makeup C. It is very much more simple and it definitely portrays a pre-Revolutionary war themed play. As it is obviously simple, the character is needed to futher the play's plot.

  5. A: this guy's makeup looks like the guy in old lace. he has alot of makeup so it can be visible to the crowd. he looks like an old man.
    B: not applicable
C: this guy looks like he would hookup with me in a heart beat. but he is in a play that is old englishish or george washingtonish
D: this person looks like he/she would be in an Indian play in which they danced.

I do not understand how picture two is not acceptable. Interesting interpretation on the last picture, because I'm sure most people would say it is part of fantasy.

  8. Response to Blog 15:

Makeup A: This guy looks like he was painted up to look like an old and experienced man with many stories to tell. The lines on his face tell a story of his life, his many hard travels. His eyes even make him look saddened and tired. This makeup may had been used for a play such as Old Lace or 12 Angry Men. The possibilities for this type of makeup are nearly endless.

Makeup B: This makeup is an cool combination of styles. It has the typical white porcelain phantom-style mask but adds the cool broken pieces and gold inlay. When I saw this I thought of a ghostly party setting. Maybe a ball consisting of only dead partygoers. Kind of like the beggining of the movie Ghost Ship. Another possibility is the instance of a voodoo gathering or Eyes Wide Shut style sex party full of mystery.

Makeup C: I have to assume that this makeup is being used in a joking way because it is utterly ridiculous. In all of the pictures of makeup from that era and modern reaistic depictions of makeup from that era, I have never seen a person with a powdered white wig with white facepaint along with a brown goatee and sideburns. This would be fine if the makeup is used in an ironic way or for comic effect but not good when used realisticly. I guess it could pass for late 18th century judge makeup but that is still confusing because I don't get why they would wear the white facepaint. I don't know, maybe I'm over analyzing this. In the end, it's just an opinion.

Makeup D: This makeup has to be from Cirque-du-Soleil. It is lavish, extravagant and over the top. The colors are bright and sequins are abundant. Its pretty awesome how the woman is barely wearing anything but wearing alot at the same time. Cirque-du-Soliel proves that dialogue and story does not mean everything in theatre. The picture does a great job of showing the true intricacies of the paint.

  9. Response to Michael Guerrero: I agree that makeup D looks similiar to something that may have come out of a cartoon.

  10. Like sets, make-up and costumes also help portray the time period and the area in which the characters undergo their story. However, make-up is a more individual story of each character, which describes the age, ethnicity, and sometimes share with the audience mythological or futuristics aspect of the character. Make-up portrays to the audience a more specific view of the play by creating detail of the sets by which type of character is interacting with the set. For example, one set could be used for two different cultures or time periods. Make-up and costumes portrays with the audience which time period and which culture is to being used by showing which type of inhabitants are on stage.
A The first style of make-up looks like it is trying to depict a whole assortment of wrinkle which indicates this person is meant to play the part of someone old, also the hair is gray. I do not know why the person is old, but from what I can tell, this person looks to be in a realistic play. However, we would need the setting and the storyline to know if this man is a normal “old person”, or if he is “forced” to be old when he really is not.
B Without the golden part of the make-up, this female, as I am assuming, would remind me much of the people from Kiss. However the cracks of black and the gold covering above this person’s left eye, make me believe that this is not a typical, average, ordinary character. Maybe, since the make-up is being shown at a very close scale, that it meant to look entirely changed on stage.
C The man’s make-up is stereotypical of the Renaissance era because he is wearing heavy white powder mixed with bright rosy cheeks, lips and eyes. If i did not see the wig, I would be very much confused, but the wig is the greatest factor that tells me he is from the Renaissance era and the rest of his make-up confirms my thoughts. However, that could be utterly false with any play setting and storyline.
D In my opinion, this last picture is undoubtedly the most thorough of the four because it shows a full body scale, which is covered in either costume, make-up, or both from head to toe. The background is a huge indicator that this actor is going to be performing in a fantastical performance. The assortment of colors also gives off this vibe as well.

  11. A) This makeup looks like it belongs to an actor playing an old man. One can tell this because the hair is white and the wrinkles are evident. It is very well done. I’m sure he plays a sad old man in a play. I can tell this because of the face he is making. He seems very sad. This is obviously a serious play as well.
    B) This one is very strange. It might be a Greek play. I’m thinking that she is a goddess in the play. The makeup also makes her seem evil. She doesn’t look like a good guy character. She looks corrupted. This also seems like a serious play to me. I would like to find what play she is really from.
    C) This one is a bit easier than the others. He is obviously from an old play. The powdered wig and face give this away. He plays a rich character in the play. He could be a judge. These plays aren’t my favorite. They get kind of boring. I would much rather see makeup B than C.
    D) This one is hard. I think it belongs in a fantasy play. She could be something like a water goddess. She looks like she is very powerful and wise. This is probably the character that she plays in the play. She definitely belongs in a fantasy though. I would like to go see a fantasy play.

  12. My response to Marc Hodges
I agree with your part A. And the girl in B did remind me of kiss a little bit. C is definitely the renaissance. Yeah, D is definitely fantasy, no doubt about it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Makeup A – This is obviously an old man. Assuming that he is the main character in the play he is in I bet he gone through much hard times. He appears to have a certain sadness about him that makes him seem wise.
Makeup B – This makeup looks like it belongs in some sort of horror show. She is painted up to look like a demon possibly. I doubt this is a main character. It looks like she is a supporting antagonist character that the main character tries to defeat.
Makeup C – This makeup looks like the character will be playing a role in the British parliament. Back in the day men used to be the ones who wore makeup. Based of the historical pictures I have seen this is probably the makeup of either a British or Early American lawmaker.
Makeup D – This makeup is used for some sort of fantasy play. The paint seems to have florescent effect to it. On stage I bet it has a very good reflective effect to it making the actor seem almost angelic.

  14. Austin Rudolph response to blog 15:
Makeup A: This person is most likely playing an older character in a play. This can be seen in the deep wrinkles in his face and neck. In a way, he also looks sad. This is probably a result of years of hard work and stress. The gray hair also helps the audience member visualize the character’s age.
Makeup B: This person seems to be wearing many different characters. The gold around the eyes can represent some type of magician or entertainer. The white and the black seem to represent some type of evil character. With that in mind you could say that the evil in this person outweighs the good.
Makeup C: This person seems to represent a wealthy European during the time of the Renaissance. Most men of high status during this time also wore the powered wig. Along with the makeup, there is a small black spot. This shows their belief that no one is perfect.
Makeup D: This is definitely a fantasy type of makeup. It is actually from the Dralion show of Cirque du Soleil. The character is filled with bright colors and elaborate designs. This helps the character tell the audience to relax and let their mind free. It also shows that anything is possible.

I too agree with you on makeup A. The look on his face does make him look a little sad.

  17. Makeup A: This seems to represent an old man, probably in his late 50's or early 60's. He's not too old, but he's getting there. HE certainly does not seem happy so he seems like a struggling old man who is having trouble getting by. I could not really tell you what play it may come from, but there are several choices.

Makeup B: This makeup reminds me of a circus performer or maybe a figure that is supposed to be scary. The work that is done on the eyes and other parts is probably meant to have be seen by the audience more than the character of the old man.

Makeup C: This reminds me of a Shakespearn play or at least one of the same era. It may even be used to make fun of the way people of that era dressed because of the mole the character has.

Makeup D: This reminds me of a sci-fi character or even a circus performer. The colors are very visible, and easy to catch the eye of the audience. It would be in some sort of fantasy play or one which includes the supernatural.

  18. Response to Austin: Interesting that you saw Makeup D as something in Cirque de Soliel. I thought of him as somebody in the circus, but Cirque de Soliel is also a possibility.

  19. The best part of the opera is the actors ability to sing so loudly and still be able to pronounce words clearly, the singers are so overly dramactic and larger than life.

I am very respectful of the show, I think that all the time and effort and talent that goes into the shows are something of great talent but it is still nothing I would pay good hard earned money to see.

If I had to watch an opera I would pick a comedy because I am not mature enough to sit through a serious opera

The set and costumes are similar because they are grand and elaborate and bigger than life

  20. Makeup A looks to be an old man in probably his late 60s. He looks quite sad in the photograph so maybe his wife just died or something of grief has come over him. This play could be about how he tries to overcome some loss of some sort.
Makeup B will not show up on my computer.
Makeup C looks to be an old type of actor. Kind of like how in the early history of our country everyone wore white wigs. This is what this picture screams to me. He could be playing someone of an earlier time than now and he is wearing a white curly wig to symbolize the history.
Makeup D looks very circus like. The picture looks like the person should be in the circus’ center ring. The play that this character could be in is something with fairies because there is a small fairy flying away in the side of the picture.

  21. response to Adrian:

your noticing of the mole is really quite a good job of studying the photos.

  22. Makeup 1: This picture obviously shows an old man. This man looks as if he has been through many tragedies in life. He looks like he is very sad and possibly just lost a loved one, possible his wife or child.
Makeup 2: This picture would not show up on my computer
Makeup 3: This makeup shows an upper class man from probably a few hundred years ago, likely during the Victorian Age. At this time, the wealthy wore wigs and very light makeup to separate themselves from the lower classes.
Makeup 4: This makeup was obviously done for a fantasy type of play. This character was likely from an out-of-this-world place, perhaps coming to visit earth to get away from something on it's own planet.

  24. Justin Scheuner response to blog 15
I think Makeup A would most likely be used in a play that featured an elderly farmer, who was being harassed to sell his land to real estate developers, but was refusing to do so, because a number of generations of his families had owned the farm and given it a legacy that he is unwilling to give up. Makeup B would be used in a Japanese play that was mythological in nature, that examined the mistakes of man when he falls in love with a forbidden thing (in this case, the women pictured). The play would feature great choreographed dance numbers, but also emotional and shocking dialogue. Makeup C would be used in a French comedy that would tell the tale of a man who has everything, but then after a one night affair, loses it all, but is left with only his wig. He would eventually confront his partner in the affair, and in a shocking twist of irony, he would kill the partner, and take everything of hers, leaving her like she left him, except she would be dead. Makeup D would most likely be used in a mythological play that told the story of a battle between fairies and sprites. The fairies would be headed up by the woman pictured, and she would lead a charge against the sprites, but in the end, they would come up short (no pun intended), as they were vastly outnumbered by the sprites.

  25. Justin Scheuner response to Donnie Shea
Donnie I definitely agree with your statement concerning Makeup A. That thought of a man that has been through much tragedy came into my head at first. Then, upon closer studying of the photo, I came up with an exhausted and worn out farmer who was fighting to hold onto his land.

  26. A. The kind of story that this makeup shows me is that people are getting old and sadness is upon them. By the face and the makeup you can tell everything. And the way I got my answer is by the look of the face. The wrinkles tell that the man is old. And you can sort of tell by the look in the face and the makeup that it looks sad.
    B. The second picture is a kind of difficult one because it has two different things on a face. To me it looks like it is trying to portray a two faced girl or person. The colored part of the makeup is pretty looking and looks good to me it shows class and love or a happy time. The white and black part reminds me of darkness and hatred. The way I got this assumption is by just looking at it and thinking about it hard.
    C. The third picture is kind of difficult and I had to think really hard about this one because I don’t really know how to describe it. To me it reminds me of the old days with George Washington and all them because of the powder wigs. And the white makeup they are wearing. The reason I could tell this is because you can just look at them and see that’s that is what that is it was just hard because it could be other things but that was the first thing that popped in my head.
    D. Now the third one is confusing and looks easy to describe but to me it isn’t easy to describe, but I’m going to try and describe it. To me it looks like a fairy with all the colors and glow. It really shows a happy time and all. It is very colorful also. I really don’t get it but I tried to explain it.

  28. Vince Correale response to Blog 15:
Makeup A displays an aged character. There are many possibilities for interpretation with this type of makeup. He is most likely playing an old man whom the story is based around and has many wise stories to tell. This play most likely teaches a moral lesson to the audience.
Makeup B looks like it could possibly be for a horror show. This is a strange make up combination. She looks like she is at a Kiss concert. She is without a doubt portraying an evil character based on the color of the makeup.
Makeup C portrays a European noble during the 17th-18th centuries. The wig and white makeup remind me of a western European congressman or noble during the time of the American Revolution. He seems to be in high standing with society at that time period.
Makeup D could be interpreted many ways. I have no doubt that it is a fantasy play based on the sci-fi feeling that I get when I see all the different designs. It portrays something that takes place somewhere other than this planet. The theme of the play is an escape from reality. This type of play takes the viewer out of his or her everyday life and allows them spark their imaginations.

  29. response to John Wynne:
I have to agree wih you that makeup D looks like she should be in the circus.

  30. Makeup A looks like it belongs to a story of and older man experiencing sadness or pain and mourning of some kind.

Makeup B looks like it's from a less serious play; perhaps a more over-the-top work, or even a horror of some sort. I'm not entirely sure if it is supposed to represent a form of dark comedy or tragedy, as it is pretty hard to tell out of context.

Makeup C is the makeup of an American aristocrat in the 1700s, or a British court official. Powdered wigs were very common in the 1700s through the 1800s and are still used today in England and Australia.

Makeup D looks like the makeup of some kind of fantasy play. A story that would use this kind of makeup would be one that deals with supernatural elements or the intertwining of reality and the unreal.

    Response to T.J. Scholl:
I agree that the person in the 4th picture looks like they could be from Cirque du Soleil. I have seen some of the shows and the costumes do look very similar to that.

  31. The old man guy seems he would be used to play a poor ald beggers part in the streets of some city. I came to this conclusion because the makeup seems like he is very beat down and worn out from lack of food.
The lady with the white cacked face seems she would be in a production rendering the nightmare before christmas. Reason is because she has the same kind of facial deformities as a skull would.
The guy with the wig seems to be in a Shaksphereian time in a romace or tragedy. I conclude this because not many other eras of play use that kind of makeup and wigs.
The crazy lady seems she is some kind of magical person and would be used in a very fictional story. She has the looks of a fairy and has little people flying off of her.

    response to Austin:
Yes you can see the sadness and pain the guy has been through

  32. Makeup A: This picture makes me think, along with everybody else, of someone who is very old. The heavy make up makes the person look very old and it reminds me of like an old grandfather who sits around telling stories in his rocking chair. I could see this play being like a flashback type thing where the old man reminisces on his life time events.

Makeup B: This character seems like she could be some mythological type creature who could be some japanese story monster or something. She looks like she could be more than one character or someone that can blend in with different backgrounds.

Makeup C: Looks like a colonial type make up from maybe the time of George Washington. It looks like something you see when you talk about the early presidents and the type of wigs they war and the make up some of them would put on. I could see this make up being worn by some actors in a play on the revolutianry war or on something of that nature.

Makeup D: This makeup looks very futuristic like some sort of avatar or star wars charachter. There is definitely no way to tell what time period this is in because we havent lived through a time period where anyone looked like this. I think the make up looks really good though but it also looks as if it would take a long time. I could see this type of make up being used in some sort of space play or a play about going further in time or something.

  34. Makeup A) This makeup gives me the influence of someone that lies alone, is old, and suffers from depression. The lines and shading created this effect on me.
Makeup B) Despite multiple attempts, would not show up.
Makeup C) This makeup gives me the effect of the renaissance or the Revolutionary War time period. The white face and hair give it the early American life feel.
Makeup D) This makeup is very appealing. It feels like it is from a futuristic production, such as avatar. The lines, shading, and complexion create a future and graceful look.

  35. Makeup A: This makeup seems as if it would belong to an old farmer living out in a rural area. It reminds me of some kind of tragedy or drama, perhaps of this man having his land taken away from him. I think that the man here will go through many problems in his journey through the play.
Makeup B: This form of makeup looks like it would appear in a play involving superhuman persons or maybe even a Goth band. The women here would still look rather erotic even from a distance and she would be very noticeable to the audience. There is also a possibility that this character represents two different personality types, due to the two different styles of makeup on opposite sides of her face.
Makeup C: This makeup seems to show a man in drag. This reminds me of the play, La Caj Aux Folles, in which a drag queen finds his way through the harsh, critical world and eventually realizes that he must try and be only who he is. The wig, powdered makeup, lipstick, and small beauty mark make me think that this man is indeed posing as a woman.
Makeup D: This makeup looks as if it would be used in a play involving mythological creatures and possibly a classic battle of good versus evil. This particular character looks to be some form of an alien, with the blue and green skin tones and the purple headband.

  37. Makeup A- is of an elderly man. He looks like he has not been allowed to sleep in a long while. The character might be apart of a story of an old man, living alone and struggling to survive.
    B) Makeup B appears to be from a musical possibly. It's style is pretty wild on both halves. Possibly a demon character.
    C) Makeup C appears to be from something in the Renaissance period. It is heavy with its makeup. It looks like it might be apart of England even, maybe a comedy.
    D) Makeup D is fantasy. It looks like it is very loud. The play that this might be involved in could be anything big really. It's colors are powerful.

This charactor may be have been to potray that of an elder or somewhat mentally tired man. the other make up seems to be from the Renissance period, maybe Itallian or somthig of the like. Make up D was weird to me but still looked very good and profesional. All in all the make up potrayed in these acts was very well done even though they all were not my favorite.

in response to Robert simonetti: I agree that maybe the scene could even had been done in china.

  41. MAKEUP A- This makeup would be for an older gentlemen. The story might focus on this man and the struggles he has endured in his long life.
MAKEUP B- This makeup looks like it would appear in a horror play. Maybe a ghost who is attending a ball.
MAKEUP C- This make up looks as if it was used in the Victorian Era. The wig and pale makeup makes me think that it is either a boy who will be playing the part of a girl or it could be for an important male in society.
MAKEUP D- This looks like it would be found in a sci-fi play. The strange make up and costume present a mysterious other worldly apperance.

RESPONSE TO HUNTER FICK: Makeup d does look like its from avatar.

  42. Makeup 1: This picture obviously shows an old man. This man looks as if he has been through many tragedies in life. He looks like he is very sad and possibly just lost a loved one, possible his wife or child.
Makeup 2: This type of makeup is a very strange sort. It appears to be an evil type of character he is perhaps trying to turn good. I say this because of the golden side of her face, and gold general represents wealth.

  43. I think makeup one would be used for an old horror story and that this character would be a creepy old landlord or something. Makeup two would be used for a musical show because it resembles a musician from kiss. Makeup three could be a judge from the 1700's or a military captain of a ship in a pirate play. Makeup four looks like she could be a character in Avatar and looks like this character would be in a play about fantasies.
